BILTONG IS A VARIETY OF DRIED, CURED MEAT THAT ORIGINATED IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Various types of meat are used to produce Biltong, ranging from beef and game meats to fillets of ostrich from commercial farms. It is typically made from raw fillets of meat cut into strips following the grain of the muscle, or flat pieces sliced across the grain. It is similar to beef jerky in that they are both spiced, dried meats. The typical ingredients, taste and production processes differ, the main difference being that biltong is dried and subsequently sliced whereas jerky is sliced prior to drying. The word biltong is from the Dutch bil (“rump”) and tong (“strip” or “tongue”).
Here at Smally’s, we only ever use the best silverside cuts from UK and Irish grass fed beef. You will be able to understand why when you have your first taste!

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Biltong
They sure can – in fact, it’s way better than sugary snacks or crisps. High in protein and naturally filling, biltong makes a brilliant lunchbox addition. Just keep an eye out, because once kids discover it, they develop ninja-like abilities to raid cupboards. Bonus: biltong doesn’t cause the same sugar crashes as sweets, so your little ones can snack happy without bouncing off the walls. Just don’t blame us when the bag disappears in seconds.
Oh, you can definitely cook with it – and that’s when things get exciting. Sprinkle shredded biltong on top of pasta, toss it into omelettes, or even add it to salads for a protein-packed crunch. Some foodies use it in bread, pizzas, or even gourmet burgers. Of course, you might eat the whole stash before it ever makes it to a recipe, but hey – no judgement. Whether eaten straight or cooked with, biltong wins every time.
Absolutely – and you’ll look like the smart one while everyone else is chugging sugary shakes. Biltong is packed with protein, low in carbs, and free from the dodgy additives you find in some other snacks. It’s the perfect fuel for muscle recovery or a quick pre-workout boost. Just be warned: once your gym mates get a whiff, they’ll circle you like hungry hyenas. Share if you’re generous, or hide it if you’re wise. Your call.
Look, we’ll be honest – yes, biltong is all about meat. But that doesn’t mean vegetarians or vegans are left out of the fun. There are now plant-based alternatives out there inspired by the magic of biltong. We stick to beef because we love tradition and flavour, but the biltong spirit is spreading far and wide. If you’re a meat lover, you’re in for a treat. If not, we still salute your snack game.
The golden rule: keep it cool, keep it dry. A sealed bag of biltong can sit happily in your cupboard, but once opened, air is its biggest enemy. If you’re a slow snacker (unlike the rest of us), pop it in the fridge to keep it fresher for longer. Avoid the glovebox on hot days and definitely don’t stash it under your pillow. Biltong is irresistible, and late-night cravings could lead to regret… and crumbs in bed.
Nah, not even close. Jerky gets cooked or smoked, usually ending up chewy enough to give your jaw a workout. Biltong, on the other hand, is air-dried slowly, which preserves the natural tenderness of the meat and enhances the spice blend. The result? Biltong is richer, juicier, and often sliced thicker, so you actually taste the meat rather than just salt. If jerky is the pub snack, biltong is the five-star upgrade your tastebuds deserve.
Beef is our main star because it’s tender, lean, and perfect for soaking up flavours. That said, biltong has a history of being made from just about anything that grazes, runs, or clucks. Traditionally, game meat like kudu or ostrich was used in South Africa. We stick with top-quality beef cuts to ensure consistent flavour and texture, but adventurous eaters have been known to dabble in chicken, venison, or even fish. We’re keeping things deliciously simple for now.
